Living in 'natural surroundings' can be very pleasant. It's fun to observe flora and fauna from your deck or balcony or in your own back yard. But what do you do when the local critters become a nuisance?

Observing nature's wildlife will definitely improve your respect for their ingenuity. Raccoons have been seen removing the tops from garbage cans and squirrels can outwit the most fool-proof bird feeders. This can be very amusing and entertaining - for a while. But when they become a downright nuisance, it's time to take action.

You can start to animal proof your home by removing sources of food. Trash should be in air-tight containers. And, if possible, don't put anything out till collection day. If you have an outdoor pet, remove food dishes as soon as they have finished eating. Clean up any nuts or fruit that may drop from trees and if you eat outdoors, be sure to eliminate any remnants of your picnic.

Rats, mice and chipmunks can gain access to your home through the tiniest of openings. Seal up and patch holes to put up the 'unwelcome' sign. Caulk any cracks and fix any broken screens and windows. Chimney caps will keep birds from nesting in this area and your local hardware store can supply you with dryer vents that dissuade critters from making this their new home.

After all this, there may still be a pesky critter that figures out how to gain access. You can purchase a live trap and add some bait. Once the unwelcome guest enters, the cage closes and you can then release your catch into a safe haven away from your home. If a bat should enter your home, forget about chasing it down. Seal off the area and open a window or door. Leave the lights on and wait till dusk. Bats like the dark and will usually leave on their own. It's always best to wear protective gloves no matter what kind of animal you are trying to expel.

Remember, just like you, these animals are simply looking for food and a comfortable shelter.

      THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

The Van Wezel announces the new Broadway Series for 2005-06 with 25 productions showcasing many spectacular and thrilling performances.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical romp, based on the popular movie, that has all of New York dancing the Charlston with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.

As the season winds down at the Van Wezel we can hardly wait for what is in store for us next season.
