COMMUNITIES

A Natural Place to Call Home

The Preserve at Tara is a place that celebrates Florida's natural beauty. Towering oaks, a variety of native palms and slash pines provide a natural frame which spans 548 acres. Streams and creeks meander throughout the community feeding the many wetland preserves, which give The Preserve at Tara its name.

The Preserve at Tara will one day be home to approximately 1,100 families in single-family and condominium neighborhoods that wrap around the championship golf course.

A Natural Place to Live and Play

Tara residents may enjoy the community semi-private golf club, with its Ted McAnlis-designed championship golf course. For tennis enthusiasts, two lighted tennis courts will be available.

Cool off in the free-form community swimming pool, then plan a neighborhood get together in the adjacent 3,000 square-foot community center. With a large social room and kitchen, the community center is the perfect setting for casual entertaining. Enjoy the outdoor lifestyle that Florida has to offer with walks, jogs, cycling or skating along the tree-lined streets and nature paths located throughout The Preserve.

Tradition of Golf

Golf in the Florida tradition has been redefined by Ted McAnlis in the design of the 18-hole, par-72, championship course at The Preserve. Exceptional care was taken to protect and enhance the wetlands and other natural features of this site, while creating a challenging golf experience. The native environment incorporated with the challenging golf design is portrayed through various unique course features. At just over 7,000 yards, the course offers four sets of tees to accommodate players of all skill levels.

After a rousing game of golf enjoy country club living and relax at the Olde Florida-style clubhouse with spectacular views from wrap-around porticos. In addition to a full-service restaurant and lounge, the two-story, 14,000-square foot clubhouse will include a golf pro shop and men's and women's locker facilities.

SMALL SPACE GARDENING

Love fresh tomatoes? Long for snipped-straight-from-the-garden herbs? Short on garden space and/or time? Then container gardening might be just the ticket. You don’t need an acre of ground to enjoy the beauty and taste of these wonderful plants. Vegetables and herbs grown this way help to eliminate the problems of bad soil and airborne diseases. And it’s a great way to introduce yourself to the world of nature.

To get started on this delicious project, you'll need to gather the proper materials – potting soil and fertilizer, small rocks or pebbles, plants or seeds, and good garden gloves. Large baskets with liners and unused pottery work nicely for this project. If you're handy with simple tools, building a window box would serve double duty – form and function! Be sure to match the size of the plant to the container. Your garden center can help with information as well as quality plantings or seeds. Tomatoes will demand a larger container such as a barrel, while herbs such as oregano or dill can get by in something like a discarded planter or even a can.

Once you've determined what you wish to grow, punch small holes in the bottom of any pot that does not already have them. Add the small rocks or pebbles in the bottom for water to drain through. Place the soil and fertilizer (follow instructions from the maker) and add the plant. Gently pat the dirt around the plant, but be careful not to pack too tightly. Water generously and remember that clay pots will need to be watered more frequently. If your busy lifestyle keeps you away for periods of time, you might want to consider an automatic drip regulator available at most home improvement and garden centers. Or place the container on a large tray filled with pebbles and add water. The plant will absorb the moisture from the tray. Adding a bit of mulch will also help.

Place your new garden on a patio, deck, balcony or indoors in a sunny window. Check for insects by inspecting the underside of the leaves at least once a week. Take action quickly if your plants appear to be under attack. Whiteflies and aphids can be especially pesky. If you are suspicious, wash the stems and leaves immediately with insecticidal soap. In a short while, you'll be able to enjoy fresh tasty items from your own garden!

WICKER AND BAMBOO

Wicker and bamboo are a very popular look for outdoor furniture.

With proper care, they can last a lifetime. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and clean as needed with warm sudsy water. And be sure to rinse well afterwards. If you are restoring older wicker that may be dirty from storage, add a little ammonia to the water to cut through dirt and grime. A soft brush will help remove stubborn spots, but go careful. If repairs are needed, see a professional.
